Character Development

How do I show that I have a loving and caring family? I know it, but the reader needs to know this too. I did a bunch of research and tried different exercises to get things right such as making a chart with each member of my family showing what I know about each person, how I can show that, how they respond to crisis, details about their looks/gestures/idiosyncrasies, motivations behind their actions, etc. This helped me to some extent, but then I realized something. I wanted to show what we did together.

I finally found a way to show how amazing my family is beyond just saying “they’re awesome” by adding activities we did together as a family when I was younger, places we would go, and events that happened. All in a few paragraphs. This has added the depth to the character development that I have been trying to get since I started writing this memoir. Now my parents and sisters are more than just names; they are people who have given me unconditional love, provided me with the happiest of memories, made me laugh, and saved me in different ways.

I plan on building upon my family’s character development a little more, then I will head into trying to show friendships I’ve had with more clarity than is currently written. Not all people will be included, but that doesn’t make them any less important. I want to be sure to avoid confusion with introducing too many people, and it depends on which stories are being told.

As a side note, I won’t be adding anyone’s name without permission. So no need to be afraid about what I’m writing, not that I have anything negative to say about anybody I know. 🙂

Love always,

Michelle
